A bumper crowd at Meggatland saw a smashmouth American Football Varsity game that featured cross town rivals Edinburgh Napier Knights take on the Edinburgh Predators. With a packed stand and an electric atmosphere the game quickly sparked into life with the Predators scoring a Touchdown run after recovering a fumble deep in Knights territory.
Some error strewn football was holding back the Knights before they were able to get some points on the board with a 17 yard Field Goal from Jamie Charles. But any momentum gained was quickly lost when the Predators drove the ball 70 yards in 12 plays with a pass from game MVP Dan Cameron to Siri putting Edinburgh University up 16-3 at the half.
The Predators kept the pressure on with a 55yd pass and run to complete Siri’s brace with their first possession in the second half.
But the Knights roared straight back into the game when their best player on the day, the hard running Jamie Welsh, galloped 60 yards into the end zone. A converted kick meant the game was within reach for the Napier team but it was the Predators passing game that was to prove the difference on the day.
Cameron completed the scoring with another long bomb to Stoneham as time wound down to finish the game 28-10. The victory saw Edinburgh University lift the prestigious trophy donated by both universities Alumni associations and completed a new marquee event for the sports calendar in the capital.
More photos of the event can be found here and here and Gridiron TV have exclusive interviews on their youtube channel.
