BUAFL Match Report: EN Knights vs Sunderland Spartans

Match report from deepest darkest Border division

It may be the tail end of the season but the Edinburgh Napier Knights are now showing the form that took them to last year’s playoff series. Back to back wins and defensive shutouts put the Knights at 3-4 for the season and leave their playoff hopes living on a prayer.

If Glasgow are upset by Teeside then the Knights can sneak into the playoffs thanks to their 7-0 win over the Tiger earlier in the season with a victory over their cross town rivals, the Predators.

An impressive ground game accounted for all 5 touchdowns with a brace of scores by Running back Jamie Welsh & Quarterback Euan Rennie. With over 200 net yards on the ground the Knights won the battle of field position and ball retention leaving the Spartans to air it out in an attempt to get back in the game.

Spartans QB Al Whitehead (?) was only 4-27 on the day for 76 yards but with 4 Interceptions proving costly.

The Knights narrowly missed a 44 yard Field Goal from captain Jamie Charles before Full Back Danny Flannery completed the scoring with a 4 yard run.

Knights Head Coach Pete Laird was satisfied with his team’s performance. ‘It was certainly a better offensive performance this week and I am very happy with the way our running game performed today. Defensively we tried something new and I’m glad this seems to have worked.

We were still careless at certain points in the game with some 88 yards in negative plays lost in 2 series where we seemed to switch off. A better awareness of the game situation has to be shown.’
