Edinburgh Varsity match report

A bumper crowd of over a thousand fans attended this year’s Edinburgh Varsity American Football game at Meggetland Stadium.

Last year’s winners the Edinburgh Predators ran out victors again with an easy 30-0 victory over an error strewn Knights team. The Knights offensive woes from earlier in the season continued into this game and a pair of high snaps led to 2 point safeties as the Knights players were caught in their own endzone.

It was only some magnificent Defensive play, led by Great Britain player Ryan Strachan, that stopped the result from being even more one sided.

Predators Harry Aitken notched a brace of Touchdown runs with Quarterback Ben Pope throwing a score to Callum Northcoate before running in a touchdown himself.

The game petered out in the 4th quarter as the Predators were rarely challenged with only some better runs from backup Mark Williamson providing any comfort for the noisy home fans.

Knights Head Coach Pete Laird reflected on his team’s performance ‘Obviously I’m disappointed. The game is such a great event and I’m disappointed that we didn’t put up more of a show for the fans who came out in great numbers to support us today. But there are no easy solutions we just have to get back to work and with effort we will turn the corner.’

Winning Head Coach Stewart Adam reflected on his team’s victory as he collected the trophy. ‘We were sloppy in parts and that will need worked on but I’m happy for the team that we got the victory today’

Sponsored by Activcity and SR the game itself proved hugely successful with a Come and Try session for kids and a carnival atmosphere for the crowd which included face painting for the Edinburgh Sick Kids Friends Foundation, the Edinburgh Brass band and Napier Panther cheerleaders.
