BUAFL Top Five: Bowl Games

After suggesting that the league should consider having bowl games next season instead of Championship and Plate Trophy playoffs, we have decided to dedicate this week’s top 5 to the top 5 bowl games we would like to see.

So onto the list!

Here are a few ideas for bowl games that came up, but alas they didn't make the final cut:

Hertfordshire Hurricanes vs Brighton Tsunami in the Natural Disaster, bowl sponsored by FEMA

Nottingham Outlaws vs UEA Pirates in the Law Abiding Citizen bowl, sponsored by Dog the Bounty Hunter

Cardiff Cobras vs Cambridge Python in the "I hate snakes" bowl, sponsored by Indiana Jones

Durham Saints vs Exeter Demons in the Good versus Evil bowl, sponsored by Microsoft and Apple

5. BNU vs Hallam (or any other DW teams) in the You Shall Not Pass Bowl, sponsored by Gandalf the Grey.

According to some, you can't pass in the Double Wing (not according to our clinic article last week!), so why not have a bowl game that bans passing completely?

At the coin toss the head ref has to shout the following...Banning passing...Like a boss!

The rules would be simple – Any team that attempts to a forward pass will receive a 15 yard penalty as well as a loss of a down for ruining the spirit of the game! With the lack of clock stopping incomplete passes the game will also be over quicker, allowing more time for post match drinks.

4. Staffordshire Stallions vs. Northumbria Mustangs in the Black Beauty Bowl, sponsored by UHU glue.

These two teams have nothing in common except that both their nicknames are associated with horses, (one is a male horse and the other a breed of a horse). Therefore Staffordshire and Northumbria would have their own bowl game to decide who the true studs are and who was just a bit pony.

The winning team would all receive a trophy like this to commemorate their victory whilst the losers will be sent to the factory to be made into glue!

3. Stirling Clansmen vs. Plymouth Blitz in the 1000 Miles Bowl, sponsored by The Proclaimers.
For those of you who may be too young to understand this bowl game, this video should answer all of your problems. In for the long haul...

According to Google Maps Stirling to Plymouth is 500 miles, therefore the Proclaimers are the perfect sponsors for this matchup as one unfortunate team will be forced to make the 1000 mile round trip.

As well as being a 1000 mile bowl, this matchup would also be a true battle between North vs. South football in the UK. It will allow us to see if teams have a home field advantage in BUAFL and if fatigue/travelling long distances effects a team’s performances at University level.

All we know is that we wouldn’t want to be the team paying the travel fare.

2. Bradford Bears vs. Royal Holloway Bears or Sunderland Spartans vs. LSBU Spartans in the Copycat Bowl, sponsored by Bear Grylls or King Leonidias and the 300 Army.

We strongly recommend that you don't do this.

Originally we were going to suggest the South Wales Warriors and London Warriors could sponsor this bowl, but we wouldn’t want to be threatened with legal action or years of people not letting it go and constantly bringing it up...

Somehow these teams were allowed to have the same name in BUAFL and we think there should be a bowl game to decide who keeps the name. Obviously the winner gets to keep their name and the loser changes their name to something else.

To make this game more interesting there will be another prize and forfeit for the winner and loser of each bowl. The winners of the Bear Bowl will have to spend a week in the woods with Bear Grylls to learn how to become Born Survivors whilst the loser will have to drink their own piss.

Meanwhile in the THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Bowl, the winners will get to dine in hell, where as the losers will unfortunately get kicked down a deep well.

Or this...

1. Hallam Warriors vs. Hertfordshire Hurricanes in the Bridesmaid Bowl, sponsored by weddingmagazine.co.uk.

As the saying goes “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” and that statement is a perfect for the two teams listed in this matchup. Both teams continue to have very good regular seasons (normally going unbeaten), but once it arrives to playoff time these two teams end up losing and never making it to the Championship final.

Over the last two years Hallam and Hertfordshire have ended up losing to the two teams who went on to play in the final. Hallam lost to Loughborough during the 09/10 season and the Destroyers during the 10/11 season, where as the Canes have lost to the Lions in the semi finals the last two seasons.

Now there’s a possibility that these two teams may make it to the final this year, but if they once again continue to fall in the playoffs to the eventually finalists, they will once again end up being the bridesmaids of BUAFL until the 2012/13 season.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please add your own ideas for possible bowl games in the comments section and at 5pm tonight we will post up our favourites. All you need is two teams with a common theme, a name for your bowl and a suitable advertising partner (links to pics for posters would be good)! Try and avoid using already existing rivalry games (Steel City bowl etc), we are looking for original and funny ideas (NOTHING OVERLY RUDE)!

  6. Why are Hallam in the "bridesmaids bowl"? They were nowhere up until a couple of years ago. A couple of half decent years of moderate "success" and all of a sudden they are perennial powerhouses.
